Hi guys, it’s Kitty in Canada and welcome to this week’s article.

If you guys are wondering why I didn’t post one last week, it’s because I was really busy preparing for the spring festival performance that the Chinese school organized happening on February 2nd.

Speaking of the Chinese school, when I just arrived in Canada, the first thing I was told is that there is a Chinese school in Fredericton (the city I live in). At first, I thought it has its own building and a name and everything. But when I arrived for the first time, I finally realized it’s in a university, renting the classroom and only opens on Sundays.

Chinese school here has many kinds of courses. Besides Chinese lessons, there are also art, dance, taijiquan, martial arts, chorus, and many others, even yoga and sqare dance. The most popular course is, of course, Chinese, with beginner classes, they start with pinyin and only a small amount of characters in a whole school year. The intermediate classes are for kids like me who have been in elementary school for several years in China and have some basic Chinese. We learn some articles and ancient poems, as well as simple writing. Generally compared with my Chinese classes in China, the class here learns much slower.

But the teachers here are much nicer although they are all Chinese. Many of them are former university professors but when it comes to the teaching, they are more like Canadian teachers -- always encouraging kids and less criticizing. I heard that the teachers here are all volunteers, and they sacrifice their weekend to give us lessons.

Besides kids, there are also many adults attending Chinese schools. Some adults from China like to join the chorus, squar dance. Boys like to take martial arts, Girls like dances. In addition to the Chinese immigrants, Chinese schools sometimes have students from local who also come to learn Chinese, starting with a, o, and e and with some children as young as five or six. I also met a Chinese orphan who was adopted by a local family. Her mother sent her to learn Chinese and hope she doesn
